in their garage. It's not just about talent, the big names have a massive fan base that can fill arenas faster than you can say "encore." And you know what? Money talks, my peeps. Those huge acts bring in the big bucks, and that's what keeps the show on the road. Who cares about the young band with punk pop sensibilities with thousands of fans and followers? Will they sell merch? Can they pack an arena? 

Now, let's talk logistics. Touring, in itself, is no walk in the MacArthur Park. It takes a whole army of crew members, equipment, and a tour bus fancier than Elvis' living room! The big acts have all of the resources to pull off these mega productions, while the smaller bands might struggle to even book a decent venue. It's a tough world out there, and sometimes it's all about who's got the biggest wallet. Sadly, it's as simple as that. Also? The days of paying off radio and tv to get songs played, are loooong gone. The only thing which could possible be tweaked are the algorithms! 

When an indie artist or band looks to book a show or a run of shows, the process happens with a three-step process, known as "Hold, Challenge, & Confirm". This process for booking shows runs on a first-come, first-serve basis where the first artist to contractually commit to a date at a venue gets the show! For some, however, the process doesn't come so easy due to lack of industry knowledge or managers. 

How much will a promoter get? A manager? The venue? At the end of the day, would a five-piece band make anything to write home about? Tour budgets are very important. Groups rely on sponsorship and even labels still...

No question, the music scene is a wild ride, has been for a bit now, and you never know when the next big thing will hit the stage! So, keep rocking out in your garage or home studio, because who knows? Maybe one day you'll see a headliner selling out stadiums and living the tour life like a rockstar; with an unknown, yet well-followed indie group!

What the Hell Happened to Doo-Wop?

Hey there, my Flippers! Let's chat about the rise and fall of doo wop music from the 1950s. As you may or may not know, back in the day, doo wop was all the rage, with those sweet harmonies and catchy tunes making literally everyone swoon. Groups like The Platters and The Drifters were topping the charts and straight-up, owning the airwaves. But as time went on, something changed, and doo wop seemed to fade away like last week's leftovers.

Now, let's get real about why this dope and creative music style took a nosedive. One big reason was the shift in popular music tastes! The 1960s brought in the British Invasion with bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones stealing the spotlight. It's like peanut butter and jelly-unexpected but, oh so right! Hey there, friends! Let me tell you something: music is the best when it comes to gifts. Seriously, it's the best thing you can give someone for their birthday, holidays, or just to boost their mental health. Trust me, I'm not just saying this for fun or because every episode of The Rainbow Flipper Musical Explosion is a gift! Music has this magical power to lift our spirits, bring back memories, and even make us dance like nobody's watching. So, next time you're scratching your head for a gift idea, just remember: music is the way to go.

You can still mix a tape or CD or even playlist for someone! I bet you have the means to do so, but you gotta look around for it. Well, it's nice to know cd and tape and radio boomboxes can be found on EBay and perhaps on the FaceBook marketplace. You can go digital, create a playlist and share or even get an iTunes or Spotify gift card! People love music. Even if they've never heard of the band or artist before! 

Sometimes, if someone is in a hospital, all they want is good music. To wear headphones and escape through music. Help heal. When I was a Nursing Aide, I would find numerous post-op patients, listening to music. Eyes closed. Tuned in and dropped out! The way to be, when listening to fantastic tunes.

So, next time it's a special occasion and you're racking your brains trying to decide on what to get them, never forget: music is one the greatest gifts you can give someone...and if they have a record player, even better! 

The Birth and Harsh Death of Ska

Ska music originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and early 1960s! In conducting research, that was something I never knew! It was a fusion of traditional Jamaican mento and calypso music. It also borrowed American R&B and jazz influences. The upbeat and energetic sound of ska was mainly characterized by its offbeat guitar and piano rhythms, prominent horn sections, and catchy melodies. Such great melodies and energetic singers! I've danced in clubs to the hot sounds of live ska!

The birth of ska can be traced back to the emergence of Jamaican record labels such as Studio One and Treasure Isle, which brought together talented musicians and producers. Artists like The Skatalites, Prince Buster, and Desmond Dekker played a crucial role in popularizing ska both in Jamaica and internationally. It really blew up!

Ska music gained popularity in the 1960s, becoming the soundtrack of Jamaica's independence from British colonial rule in 1962. It also resonated with the working-class youth who found solace and joy in its infectious rhythms. Eventually, ska's popularity spread to the United Kingdom, where it became a significant part of the British mod subculture.

However, by the late 1960s, ska music began to evolve into new subgenres such as rocksteady and reggae. Rocksteady slowed down the tempo of ska, emphasizing soulful vocals and intricate harmonies. A progressive change? Reggae, which also emerged in the late 1960s, incorporated elements of ska but added a heavier bassline and a more laid-back rhythm.

As reggae gained prominence, ska music, sadly and oddly, started to decline in popularity. The political and social climate in Jamaica also played a role in the shift away from ska. The country was experiencing tons of economic hardships and nastyvpolitical unrest, which influenced lyrical themes in reggae.

Despite its decline in popularity, ska music experienced a revival in the late 1970s and early 1980s, particularly in the United Kingdom! This revival, known as the "2 Tone" movement, combined ska with punk rock and new wave influences. Bands like The Specials, Madness, and The Selecter thankfully, brought ska back into the mainstream, introducing it to a whole new generation of fans.

Since then, ska music has continued to evolve and influence various genres, including punk, alternative rock, and pop. It has experienced periodic resurgences in popularity, with bands like No Doubt and Sublime incorporating ska elements into their music in the 1990s. These bands helped ska sounds to be exposed to younger generations. 

Overall, the birth and death of ska music can be seen as a cyclical process, with periods of popularity followed by declines and subsequent revivals. However, its impact and influence on the music world remain highly significant, making ska a genre which continues to be celebrated and enjoyed by fans around the world! Long live ska! 

Who Killed Disco?

 

Disco! Once the groove of the party, has pretty much faded into obscurity. The genre which once dominated the airwaves and dance floors in the 1970s met its demise due to a combination of factors. First and foremost, disco became overexposed and commercialized, losing its authenticity and appeal. 

The saturation of disco-themed movies, TV shows, and merchandise led to a backlash from the public who grew tired of the "disco craze". Additionally, the rise of punk and new wave music provided a rebellious alternative to the polished, coke-laced and glamorous disco scene. 

The anti-disco sentiment culminated in the infamous "Disco Demolition Night" at Comiskey Park in 1979, where thousands of disco records were destroyed in a symbolic act of rebellion! And boy, how the vinyl flew through the air and onto the field...a huge boom from the field as 12" record shrapnel danced under the moon. To the delight of thousands! This event really marked the beginning of the end for disco, as it was seen as a clear indication that the genre had lost its cultural relevance. 

Despite its demise, disco's influence can still be felt in contemporary dance music, proving even in death, disco lives on. So, let us raise a glass of Moet to the fallen genre and reminisce about the good good good times it brought us; while also acknowledging the factors which contributed to its not so "far out" downfall. Disco may be gone, but its legacy will forever be remembered on the dance floor...and club bathroom stalls.

The Way of the Metal

 

Hard rock, known for its powerful guitar riffs, thunderous drums, and energetic performances, has noticeably, undergone various transformations throughout its history. One of the most significant influences on the genre's evolution was the emergence of heavy metal-which changed the course of hard rock and delve into its roots, tracing its origins back to the late 1960s!

The roots of heavy metal can be traced back to the late 1960s when bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple emerged. These bands introduced a heavier sludgier and overall, darker sound thanks to the beautiful noise produced by distorted guitars, thundering basslines, and extremely powerful vocals. Black Sabbath's self-titled debut album, released in 1970, is considered the birth of heavy metal (some even go as far as to call it the birth of grunge), with its dark and foreboding atmosphere setting the stage for the genre's fate.

Heavy metal's impact on hard rock was profound. Prior to its emergence, hard rock was primarily influenced by blues and psychedelic rock. However, heavy metal brought a new level of intensity and aggression to the genre. Bands like AC/DC, Judas Priest, and Motorhead incorporated heavy metal elements into their music, infusing hard rock with a newfound energy and power!

Over the years, metal has taken the brundt of being associated with true came cases and instances of "satanic panic" during the 80s. This ultimately was great unintended press for metal and sales soared. With OzFest and other acts like Slipknot, the genre's only gotten more powerful over time.

Sorry, I've Been Away Too Long

Last days? Perhaps...

Hey now, folks...sorry i haven't updated my blog in a bit--been crazy busy as ever! went recently to my friends' jon and amy's wedding in northern california! wine country! amazing! the ceremony was beautiful--both sides of the family: warm and caring, nice and friendly peeps...i cried, the groom cried, the wife cried--we ALL cried! it was perfect...weather was 70 degrees...amazing...i left NYC saturday, early morning...40 degrees...storm. good timing, eh?! i'm so proud and happy for these two newlyweds...they're great, smart, cool-ass folks and i'm excited for them. i DJ'd the wedding and sang a few songs (a swing version of "you shook me" by AC/DC, BTO's "you ain't seen nothin' yet" and "funkify your life" by the meters!)...it was great! but man, sitting on these airplanes for that long is something else, no? LOL...jetblue is a fun ride...flew into san fran. i hope they have kids soon! LOL...i'm all excited about newlyweds and the prospect of them having kids soon after...so what else, oh yeah, i have a meeting today with the broadway gallery about maybe showing my work there! my collages and paintings...should be very, very interesting. got together all my cookies in one basket and will pitch my art! LOL...wish me lucks. more later, including: "a-rod, please join the mets," "torre...just shut up already, will ya?" and "where in the world is carmen san diego already?!"
