What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Experimental Classical Music?

Experimental classical music is like the rebellious teenager of the genre! It's always pushing boundaries and breaking rules--then and now. It's the wild card which kept and keeps classical music fresh and exciting. Imagine Beethoven on mushrooms, that's how experimental classical music feels like to me. It's a breath of fresh air in a world where tradition sometimes feels a bit stuffy. The break away from standards or not following proper composition structure, makes for exciting musical risk play! Fly your freak flag. Arrange it any way you feel; crush the notion of what a "symphony" is and focus on what it could be. Gioachino Rossini was an early 19th century composer who one day, decided to shift gears and drum up, "Cat Duet". The piece is more satire than anything, but the fact Rossini tried something different, throws him into the "outsider" of classical music club. 

Eric Satie is a favorite of mine. His music is both whimsical and dark at the same time. Sad and often thought provoking. You've probably heard some of his work in a movie or tv show. Well, in 1893, Satie created, "Vexations"--a relatively short piece in itself, yet, to be played 840 times as if the work were on a loop! In total, this work probably clocks in at over 18 hours! That's a pretty big leap into experimental classical, with dashes of the avant-garde.  

What makes experimental classical music so important is its ability to challenge the status quo. It's like a disruptor in the world of all things classical music, shaking things up and forcing us mortals, to see things in a new light. A new approach. Without experimentation, classical music would risk becoming stagnant and repetitive as far as I'm concerned. So, much love and props to all the experimental composers for keeping the genre interesting and waking up listeners! 

Art is a perfect space to take risks and accept dares. There's no safety net necessary in the wild world of improvisation and experimentation in music. In theater. In writing and visual arts; acting and filmmaking. Pushing envelopes is a great thing for artists and creators. In monkeying around in the lab, you find yourself open to new horizons and creative paths.

Let The Strings Play

Classical music and hip hop may seem like an odd couple, but trust me, they make magic outrageously together! Picture this: the elegance of a symphony orchestra meeting the beats of a killer hip hop track. Or a violinist flowing over tracks like mcees do vocally. It's like peanut butter and jelly-unexpected but, oh so right! When these two genres collide, it's a musical feast for your ears, blending the way-back-old-school charm of classical music with the modern vibes of hip hop.

Let's break it down like this, classical music brings the sophistication, the intricate melodies, and the rich history. Hip hop, on the other hand, brings the rhythm, the groove, and raw energy. Put them together, and you've got a match of super geners, producing awe inspiring art! The contrast between the grandeur of a symphony and the urban beats of hip hop creates a unique sound that's both timeless and fresh.

It's like they're bringing Mozart to the block party! Chopin at the wheels of steel? Hip hop artists are mixing in those classical vibes, and it's creating some seriously cool tunes. I mean, who knew Black Violin and The WuTang Clan could be a match made in music heaven? So, how are they doing it? Well, these hip hop geniuses are sampling classical music like it's going out of style. They're taking those old-school symphonies and giving them a fresh new beat. It's like a musical mashup that's blowing everyone's minds. And let me tell you, the trend needs more attention and projects. If not sampling the legends, hip hop producers will call upon classical musicians for the sound which cannot be emulated...no matter how great the synth is or AI. 

Violin, cello, strings in hop hop opened up a whole new world of music for everyone. Classical music lovers meet hip hop swagger. So next time you're looking for something new to jam to, don't be afraid to mix it up with some classical and hip hop fusion. It's like having the best of both worlds-a musical experience which is both classy and cool at the same time. 

Who Killed Disco?

 

Disco! Once the groove of the party, has pretty much faded into obscurity. The genre which once dominated the airwaves and dance floors in the 1970s met its demise due to a combination of factors. First and foremost, disco became overexposed and commercialized, losing its authenticity and appeal. 

The saturation of disco-themed movies, TV shows, and merchandise led to a backlash from the public who grew tired of the "disco craze". Additionally, the rise of punk and new wave music provided a rebellious alternative to the polished, coke-laced and glamorous disco scene. 

The anti-disco sentiment culminated in the infamous "Disco Demolition Night" at Comiskey Park in 1979, where thousands of disco records were destroyed in a symbolic act of rebellion! And boy, how the vinyl flew through the air and onto the field...a huge boom from the field as 12" record shrapnel danced under the moon. To the delight of thousands! This event really marked the beginning of the end for disco, as it was seen as a clear indication that the genre had lost its cultural relevance. 

Despite its demise, disco's influence can still be felt in contemporary dance music, proving even in death, disco lives on. So, let us raise a glass of Moet to the fallen genre and reminisce about the good good good times it brought us; while also acknowledging the factors which contributed to its not so "far out" downfall. Disco may be gone, but its legacy will forever be remembered on the dance floor...and club bathroom stalls.

The Way of the Metal

 

Hard rock, known for its powerful guitar riffs, thunderous drums, and energetic performances, has noticeably, undergone various transformations throughout its history. One of the most significant influences on the genre's evolution was the emergence of heavy metal-which changed the course of hard rock and delve into its roots, tracing its origins back to the late 1960s!

The roots of heavy metal can be traced back to the late 1960s when bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple emerged. These bands introduced a heavier sludgier and overall, darker sound thanks to the beautiful noise produced by distorted guitars, thundering basslines, and extremely powerful vocals. Black Sabbath's self-titled debut album, released in 1970, is considered the birth of heavy metal (some even go as far as to call it the birth of grunge), with its dark and foreboding atmosphere setting the stage for the genre's fate.

Heavy metal's impact on hard rock was profound. Prior to its emergence, hard rock was primarily influenced by blues and psychedelic rock. However, heavy metal brought a new level of intensity and aggression to the genre. Bands like AC/DC, Judas Priest, and Motorhead incorporated heavy metal elements into their music, infusing hard rock with a newfound energy and power!

Over the years, metal has taken the brundt of being associated with true came cases and instances of "satanic panic" during the 80s. This ultimately was great unintended press for metal and sales soared. With OzFest and other acts like Slipknot, the genre's only gotten more powerful over time.

Another Musical Explosion for Your Ears and Soul

 

Hey there, Flippers! For years, my family and I have been neighbors with Joe Matt, the genius behind the comic, Peepshow. Joe was never just your average comic creator. He's a true artist who knows how to capture the raw emotions of life, particularly his own. His work was at times self-deprecating, always humorous and always very real. You read his comics and you feel as though you know him! I'd always have conversations with him about old comic book artists, music, life back east (we're in Los Angeles), old westerns...you name it. Yesterday (Sunday 9/17), my lady and I were extremely shocked to find out he passed away. His housemate, in tears, told us the upsetting news and I instantly started crying.  

 

He was just such a nice, good man. He was always creating and in fact, was working with producers to translate his comic into an animated show. He wanted me to do the voice for one of the characters. "Can you do a Philly accent?" "Pass me a hoagie, Mike Schmidt", I replied trying my best. He laughed and said, "close enough". Joe was nominated for a Will Eisner Award for Peepshow. A great accomplishment to accompany his prolific career. He will be missed and I'm still grappling with the fact he passed away at 60, while meanwhile, Henry Kissinger is alive and well at 100. Makes no sense to me. Bless Joe Matt and his kindness. 

 

When anyone's going through a tough time, usually, playing and listening to favorite tunes helps in one's healing process. And it's always cosmic when those songs perfectly encapsulate our feelings. Rock music has obvi been a dominant force in the music industry for decades. From the revolutionary sounds of the 1960s to the heavy guitar riffs of the 1980s and new wave/punk, rock music has evolved and transformed over time. But what about modern-day rock music? Is it still worth a listen? Let's dive into the world of modern rock music and find out if it's still rocking the charts.

Rock has always been synonymous with rebellion, angst, and raw energy. Safe to suggesr angst moreso in the 90s? The genre began with pioneers like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones, who laid the foundation for what was to come. But, don't ever forget the brilliance of old blues masters. Rock music eventually branched into various subgenres, such as punk, grunge, alternative rock, and more. Each subgenre added its own unique flare to the landscape.

In the 21st century, the music scene has witnessed a shift in sound and style. While the classic rock bands continue to tour and release new material, a new wave of rock acts has emerged. These modern rock bands incorporate elements from different genres, such as pop, hip-hop, and electronic music, to create a fresh sound, though, at times ot can be very derivative. 

I think the question on everyone's mind is whether modern rock music is still good! Well, the answer is subjective...Just like any other genre, modern rock music has its hits and misses. There are bands which stay true to the core elements of rock, delivering high energy performances and catchy melodies resonating with audiences. On the other hand, some bands may prioritize commercial success over artistic integrity, resulting in a more mainstream sound that appeals to a wider audience. Many artists have found more income writing ad jingles.

What makes modern rock music worth a listen is its ability to adapt and stay relevant in an ever-evolving music industry. Modern rock artists are not afraid to experiment with different sounds and styles, leading perhaps to some sort of innovation of the genre. 

Modern rock continues to serve as an outlet for self-expression, providing a platform for both musicians and fans to channel their emotions and connect with like-minded individuals. Even if mostly digital and without even going to a studio! 

While the sound may have evolved, the spirit of rebellion and authenticity remains. It's a genre which will always continue to push boundaries and captivate audiences with its energy and emotion. It's all, as since Elvis' first hip shake, still subjective.

Hey there, listeners! Let me tell you about this musical genius named Vivaldi. Seriously, this guy was off the charts talented! I mean, we're talking about a composer who kicked out over 500 concertos. That's mind-numbing! And get this, he didn't just stick to one instrument.
