Who Stole The Soul and Blues?

Oh, where oh where have all the soulful crooners and downtrodden songwriters gone? It seems like the music world has taken a slight detour through a land of synthetic beats and auto-tuned vocals, leaving the rich, emotional essence of soul, blues, and R&B in the dust. Sure, we’ve got a handful of artists trying to keep the flame alive, but to be honest—most of them are more interested in their slick production than in actually playing an instrument. The Weekend? I guess you can slap an R&B label on him, but it feels more like a marketing gimmick than a genuine homage to the genre. But, he is a very talented performer with a great voice. Don't forget that...

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for evolution in music. But when did we decide that a laptop and a catchy hook were enough to replace the raw, gritty sound of a live band? The heart and soul of blues and R&B came from the sweat of musicians jamming together, pouring their lives into every note. Today, it’s all about the glitz and glam, with artists more concerned about their Instagram followers than lyrical authenticity. Sure, there are bands out there trying to break the mold, but they’re like rare Pokémon—hard to find and often overlooked.

So, what’s the verdict? Are we really progressing, or just regressing into a bland musical landscape? It’s like trading a hearty home-cooked meal for a pre-packaged microwave dinner. We’re losing the essence of what made these genres so powerful and moving. Let’s hope that some brave souls pick up their guitars and drums and remind us what true soul, blues, and R&B are all about—because right now, it honestly feels like we’re stuck in a kinda, musical desert, desperately searching for a drop of that sweet, soulful rain.

Friday

Hey there, music lovers! Let me spill the 311 on why only the big shots, the superstars, the singers who also act, the social media influencers who think they can carry a note; hit the road for tours while the smaller acts seem to be stuck

in their garage. It's not just about talent, the big names have a massive fan base that can fill arenas faster than you can say "encore." And you know what? Money talks, my peeps. Those huge acts bring in the big bucks, and that's what keeps the show on the road. Who cares about the young band with punk pop sensibilities with thousands of fans and followers? Will they sell merch? Can they pack an arena?

Now, let's talk logistics. Touring, in itself, is no walk in the MacArthur Park. It takes a whole army of crew members, equipment, and a tour bus fancier than Elvis' living room! The big acts have all of the resources to pull off these mega productions, while the smaller bands might struggle to even book a decent venue. It's a tough world out there, and sometimes it's all about who's got the biggest wallet. Sadly, it's as simple as that. Also? The days of paying off radio and tv to get songs played, are loooong gone. The only thing which could possible be tweaked are the algorithms!

When an indie artist or band looks to book a show or a run of shows, the process happens with a three-step process, known as "HoldChallenge, & Confirm". This process for booking shows runs on a first-come, first-serve basis where the first artist to contractually commit to a date at a venue gets the show! For some, however, the process doesn't come so easy due to lack of industry knowledge or managers.

How much will a promoter get? A manager? The venue? At the end of the day, would a five-piece band make anything to write home about? Tour budgets are very important. Groups rely on sponsorship and even labels still...

No question, the music scene is a wild ride, has been for a bit now, and you never know when the next big thing will hit the stage! So, keep rocking out in your garage or home studio, because who knows? Maybe one day you'll see a headliner selling out stadiums and living the tour life like a rockstar; with an unknown, yet well-followed indie group!

What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Experimental Classical Music?

Experimental classical music is like the rebellious teenager of the genre! It's always pushing boundaries and breaking rules--then and now. It's the wild card which kept and keeps classical music fresh and exciting. Imagine Beethoven on mushrooms, that's how experimental classical music feels like to me. It's a breath of fresh air in a world where tradition sometimes feels a bit stuffy. The break away from standards or not following proper composition structure, makes for exciting musical risk play! Fly your freak flag. Arrange it any way you feel; crush the notion of what a "symphony" is and focus on what it could be. Gioachino Rossini was an early 19th century composer who one day, decided to shift gears and drum up, "Cat Duet". The piece is more satire than anything, but the fact Rossini tried something different, throws him into the "outsider" of classical music club.

Eric Satie is a favorite of mine. His music is both whimsical and dark at the same time. Sad and often thought provoking. You've probably heard some of his work in a movie or tv show. Well, in 1893, Satie created, "Vexations"--a relatively short piece in itself, yet, to be played 840 times as if the work were on a loop! In total, this work probably clocks in at over 18 hours! That's a pretty big leap into experimental classical, with dashes of the avant-garde.

What makes experimental classical music so important is its ability to challenge the status quo. It's like a disruptor in the world of all things classical music, shaking things up and forcing us mortals, to see things in a new light. A new approach. Without experimentation, classical music would risk becoming stagnant and repetitive as far as I'm concerned. So, much love and props to all the experimental composers for keeping the genre interesting and waking up listeners!

Art is a perfect space to take risks and accept dares. There's no safety net necessary in the wild world of improvisation and experimentation in music. In theater. In writing and visual arts; acting and filmmaking. Pushing envelopes is a great thing for artists and creators. In monkeying around in the lab, you find yourself open to new horizons and creative paths.

The Power of The Home Recording Studio

Hey there, my lovely Rainbow Flipper Musical Explosion listeners! I want to take this moment to write about how home music studios have totally, and utterly, revolutionized the entire music scene! I'm blown away by how much impact they've had on the industry...as long as one has themselves the proper hardware and software, the world is their oyster! These days, literally, anyone with a laptop and a microphone can create top-notch sounding tracks right from their home. Apartments. Garages. No need for fancy studios or big budgets anymore! Kiss the studio musician, once revered, now, no longer needed. This isn't a good thing at all. Any lover of music and instantly hear the dif between a studio musician in the groove and an artist alone in their home, synthetically and digitally, creating the music background. A variety of faux instruments at your fingertips! It sounds coo, don't get me wrong. I'm just pointing out a ton of us, can hear the battle of soul versus tech.

One major way home music studios have shaken things up is by giving artists full creative control. No more dealing with pushy producers, A&R, or record labels telling you what to do. You call the shots now, brothers and sisters! This freedom has led to a surge in unique sounds and styles, flooding the music market. You hear home produced tracks in ads, television shows and movies. Unless you're a Taylor Swift or Elton John, it's very hard for some bands and songwriters to make bank on tour. A lot comes from high priced ticket sales and merchandise. Home studios offer a way to still be talented and creative, while expanding reach. Social media platforms, major online advertising companies, streamers are all the places one can use to build an audience and get work heard!

And let's not forget about the democratization of music production! Back in the day, only the elite few could actually afford studio time. More often than not, that's where the labels and producers come in as they paid for studio time, knowing the end result would provide a financial return and profit! But now, with affordable equipment and software at our fingertips, everyone can dive into music-making. This has opened doors for so many talented folks who might have never had a chance otherwise...

Technological Music Industry Remix

Hey there, music lovers! Let's dive briefly into how technology has totally flipped the music industry on its head. From vinyl to streaming, the evolution has been wild! Back in the day, you had to hit up a record store to grab the latest tunes. Find the new hottest acts. Now? It's all about Spotify and Apple Music - convenience at its finest! Need an album to take on the go and need it now? Don't need the liner notes?

Remember the days of mixtapes and CDs? Now it's all about creating killer playlists while on the couch. Thanks to technology, we've got access to pretty much any song we want, whenever we want it. Plus, artists can now reach fans directly through social media-ain't no need for big record labels calling the shots.

But hey, it's not all rainbow flippers and butterflies. With the rise of digital downloads and streaming, some artists struggle to make a decent living. It's a tough gig out there, with so much competition. Despite the challenges, one thing's for sure-technology has revolutionized the way we discover, listen to, and share music. But will there ever be a callback to analog ways? In some ways, folks like Bob Dylan and Jack White have expressed the need for vinyl and new albums to be printed on vinyl. There's no question, the sound of a digital track or album is a very clean and fine tuned work. Vinyl and cassette tapes are more organic in their sound. Fuller. Raw. Crackles. Sounds of tape wheels whirling. Nothing can ever beat the physical value music has. No matter how quickly you need to listen to your fave band or artist, don't forget, sometimes it's cool to wait.

What the Hell Happened to Doo-Wop?

Hey there, my Flippers! Let's chat about the rise and fall of doo wop music from the 1950s. As you may or may not know, back in the day, doo wop was all the rage, with those sweet harmonies and catchy tunes making literally everyone swoon. Groups like The Platters and The Drifters were topping the charts and straight-up, owning the airwaves. But as time went on, something changed, and doo wop seemed to fade away like last week's leftovers.

Now, let's get real about why this dope and creative music style took a nosedive. One big reason was the shift in popular music tastes! The 1960s brought in the British Invasion with bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones stealing the spotlight. Suddenly, doo wop was old news, kinda like trying to rock a mullet in the era of man buns (did I actually just write that?!). The music scene moved on, leaving our beloved doo wop in the dust. Left for dead. So long, Mister Bassman.

But hey, don't fret too much. While doo wop might not be topping the charts these days, its influence can sorta still be felt in modern music. Artists like Bruno Mars, Meghan Trainor, Amy Whinehouse (RIP) and Adele, have drawn inspiration from those soulful harmonies and smooth melodies. So, even though doo wop may have taken a backseat (without a seatbelt), its legacy lives on in the music we groove to today...even if you have to pay a little bit of extra attention.

The Importance of Birthday Music

Hey there, listeners! Let's chat about the absolute necessity of having killer birthday music at any celebration. Picture this: you're at a party, the vibe is just right, and then a banger comes on - it's like the whole room lights up! That's the power of great birthday music. It sets the tone, gets everyone in the mood to celebrate, and keeps the energy high throughout the night. Trust me, without good tunes, a birthday bash can feel more like a wake! Our daughter turned nine years young and I dedicated the latest TRFME episode to her, playing some of her fave songs! I know this digi-radio show mix will pump her up!

Now, let's talk about the impact of music on our emotions. Have you ever noticed how a certain song can instantly transport you back in time? Well, the same goes for birthday music. When you hear those familiar tunes that remind you of past celebrations, it's like a rush of nostalgia hits you. It brings back all those happy memories and makes the present moment even more special. Music has this magical way of connecting us to our emotions and creating lasting impressions.

Lastly, let's not forget the importance of creating the right atmosphere with birthday music. Whether you're throwing a big party or just having a small gathering, the music you choose can make or break the mood. From setting a relaxed vibe for a casual get-together to pumping up the energy for a wild party, the right playlist is key. So, next time you're planning a birthday celebration, remember to put some thought into the music selection! AND don't forget to subscribe to The Rainbow Flipper Musical Explosion!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELEANOR!!!

Let The Strings Play

Classical music and hip hop may seem like an odd couple, but trust me, they make magic outrageously together! Picture this: the elegance of a symphony orchestra meeting the beats of a killer hip hop track. Or a violinist flowing over tracks like mcees do vocally. It's like peanut butter and jelly-unexpected but, oh so right! When these two genres collide, it's a musical feast for your ears, blending the way-back-old-school charm of classical music with the modern vibes of hip hop.

Let's break it down like this, classical music brings the sophistication, the intricate melodies, and the rich history. Hip hop, on the other hand, brings the rhythm, the groove, and raw energy. Put them together, and you've got a match of super geners, producing awe inspiring art! The contrast between the grandeur of a symphony and the urban beats of hip hop creates a unique sound that's both timeless and fresh.

It's like they're bringing Mozart to the block party! Chopin at the wheels of steel? Hip hop artists are mixing in those classical vibes, and it's creating some seriously cool tunes. I mean, who knew Black Violin and The WuTang Clan could be a match made in music heaven? So, how are they doing it? Well, these hip hop geniuses are sampling classical music like it's going out of style. They're taking those old-school symphonies and giving them a fresh new beat. It's like a musical mashup that's blowing everyone's minds. And let me tell you, the trend needs more attention and projects. If not sampling the legends, hip hop producers will call upon classical musicians for the sound which cannot be emulated...no matter how great the synth is or AI.

Violin, cello, strings in hop hop opened up a whole new world of music for everyone. Classical music lovers meet hip hop swagger. So next time you're looking for something new to jam to, don't be afraid to mix it up with some classical and hip hop fusion. It's like having the best of both worlds-a musical experience which is both classy and cool at the same time.

Remember When Rock and Hip Hop Had An Affair?

Hip hop and rock music have long been intertwined, with each genre influencing and fueling the other in unique ways. Honestly, the fusion of these two genres has resulted in some of the most iconic and groundbreaking music of our time. From the early days of Run-D.M.C. collaborating with Aerosmith to the modern-day success of artists like Linkin Park and Jay-Z, the hip hop and rock crossover has proven to be a powerful force in the music industry. I can still listen to the Judgement Night album (props to Brother Jav M for the vinyl of this dope record) and be taken back to a time when Teenage Fanclub and De La Soul or Sonic Youth with Cypress Hill, just made sense and sounded fantastic!

One of the key elements which made the hip hop and rock crossover so successful is the shared rebellious spirit of both genres. Both hip hop and rock music have historically been associated with counterculture movements and have provided a platform for artists to express their frustrations and challenge societal norms. This shared sense of nonconformity has led to some truly unforgettable collaborations and performances. Organic and honest.

Another factor contributiung to the success of the hip hop and rock crossover is the complementary nature of the two genres. At the end of the night, hip hop, with its emphasis on rhythm, poetry, and storytelling, brings a unique lyrical and vocal style to the table. When combined with the raw energy and power of rock music, the result is a dynamic and explosive sound which resonates with audiences around the world. Literally, around the world! Brand New Heavies, though not really "rock" but more groove vibes, worked with numerous mcees in creating a wonderful album. One which still stands out from that era of dope live music backing terrific rappers.

Furthermore, the hip hop and rock crossover has opened up new avenues for artistic expression and experimentation. Artists from both genres have pushed the boundaries of what is considered "acceptable" or "mainstream" music, often blending elements of hip hop and rock with other genres such as heavy rock, electronic music to jazz. This has resulted in some truly innovative and groundbreaking music.

Ultimately, the fusion of hip hop and rock music has had a profound impact on the music industry, fueling and inspiring artists from both genres to create some of the most influential and memorable music of our time. The complementary nature, and willingness to experiment have all contributed to the success of the hip hop and rock crossover. Whether it's the iconic collaborations of the past or the exciting new artists pushing the boundaries today, the hip hop and rock crossover continues to shape the landscape of modern music. So turn up the volume, let the beats drop, and enjoy the fusion of hip hop and rock that has captivated audiences for decades. Audiences come together when their favorite genres/bands work with those hip hop artists.

I'd Love to Compose a Modern Day Opera But...

Watch your wine glasses!

Composing a modern day opera is no easy task. Duh, right? It's like trying to juggle flaming torches while riding a unicycle-over a street with cracks and potholes. You see, opera is not just about beautiful melodies and soaring voices. It's really a very complex art form requiring a delicate balance of music, drama, and storytelling.

First, let's talk about the music itself. Modern day opera composers generally have to navigate a musical landscape which is constantly evolving. There's the obvious need to incorporate a wide range of musical styles, from classical to contemporary, and everything in between. It's like trying to create a gourmet meal using ingredients from every cuisine in the world, but you can't find where anything is and people are hungry. Yelling. So you drop ladles and trip over the broom...

But it doesn't stop there. Composing a modern day opera also means tackling complex themes and narratives. Gone are them days of simple love stories and tragic heroes. Nowadays, today's operas delve into the depths of human emotions and tackle social and political issues head-on. It's like trying to write a novel, a play, and a screenplay all at once; a chubby literary feat which requires both skill and creativity!

Ultimately, composing a modern day opera is a labor of love and a true test of artistic prowess. It's like climbing Mount Everest or solving a Rubik's Cube...upside down dangling over a pit of flames! A challenge which only the bravest and most talented can conquer! So, the next time you attend an opera (revival or modern day new), take a moment to appreciate the complexities behind the scenes. It's a true masterpiece in the making and a feeling to behold.

Country's Crossover Into Pop Music

Country music has, no doubt, long been a beloved genre: with its heartfelt lyrics, twangy guitars, and relatable stories of love, loss, and life in rural America, the attraction has always been there. Yet, in recent years, country music has experienced a significant crossover into the world of pop music, captivating a wider audience and blurring the lines between the two genres. This evolution has not only brought about a fresh new sound, incorporating pop sensibilities, but has also sparked a new wave of creativity and collaboration within the music industry. New wave country?

The roots of country music can be traced way back to the early 20th century, originating from the folk and blues traditions of the American South. Over the years, country music has seemingly evolved, incorporating elements of rock, pop, and even hip-hop, leading to a more diverse and inclusive sound. The blending of genres has allowed country music to reach a broader audience, appealing to fans who may not have previously considered themselves into country music at all.

One of the key factors contributing to country music's crossover into pop is the rise of country-pop artists who have successfully bridged the gap between the two genres. Artists like Taylor Swift, Shania Twain, and Keith Urban have seamlessly integrated pop elements into their music, creating catchy hooks and polished production that resonate with mainstream audiences. These artists have not only achieved commercial success but have also paved the way for other country artists to explore new musical territories. And yes, Swift does dabble with country. Both lyrically at times and music-wise.

Another significant factor in country music's crossover is the increasing collaboration between country and pop artists. This trend has resulted in some of the most memorable and chart topping hits.

The question remains: is this all a set-up for a short lived fad? 10 years from now, will it evolve again? Will we return to the more traditional country as listeners and fans dig deeper into the genre's history?

Music Will Always Make For A Great Present (from mixtapes/cds/playlists to iTunes gift cards)

Happy Birthday Flipper!!!

Hey there, friends! Let me tell you something: music is the best when it comes to gifts. Seriously, it's the best thing you can give someone for their birthday, holidays, or just to boost their mental health. Trust me, I'm not just saying this for fun or because every episode of The Rainbow Flipper Musical Explosion is a gift! Music has this magical power to lift our spirits, bring back memories, and even make us dance like nobody's watching. So, next time you're scratching your head for a gift idea, just remember: music is the way to go.

You can still mix a tape or CD or even playlist for someone! I bet you have the means to do so, but you gotta look around for it. Well, it's nice to know cd and tape and radio boomboxes can be found on EBay and perhaps on the FaceBook marketplace. You can go digital, create a playlist and share or even get an iTunes or Spotify gift card! People love music. Even if they've never heard of the band or artist before!

Sometimes, if someone is in a hospital, all they want is good music. To wear headphones and escape through music. Help heal. When I was a Nursing Aide, I would find numerous post-op patients, listening to music. Eyes closed. Tuned in and dropped out! The way to be, when listening to fantastic tunes.

So, next time it's a special occasion and you're racking your brains trying to decide on what to get them, never forget: music is one the greatest gifts you can give someone...and if they have a record player, even better!

Are People Still Dancing in Clubs?

Hey there,! Let's talk about the birth of dance clubs and whether they're still kickin' and groovin' in 2023. So, back in the day, dance clubs burst onto the scene in and around, the late 20th century. They were all about the music, the dancing, and the party vibes. Sure, we can't forget the drug scenes. The hooking up with people on the dance floor. later, spilling out onto the street in search of food. Any food. People flocked to these hotspots to let loose, shake their groove thang, and escape the world at-large. It was a revolution, a cultural phenomenon which ultimately, defined an era.

But when you fast forward to today, you might be wondering if dance clubs are even still relevant. If they're still a "thing". Well, my take on it is they definitely haven't lost their mojo really. Sure, things have evolved with the times (who dances during a pandemic in a club?), but the essence of what makes dance clubs so darn fun remains the same. The favorite hits you loved shaking tail feathers to, are still being played, the lights are still dazzling, and the energy is still electric!

In 2023, dance clubs continue to be a place where people can come together, forget their worries, and just dance like nobody's watching. People are hopefully, and I bet, safer than they were. Not as fancy free and without worry as we were decades ago. It's a sanctuary for self-expression, a haven for dance music lovers, and a breeding ground for new trends and crazy styles. Whether you're into hip-hop, house, trance, dub, or good ol' disco, there's definitely a club out there which caters to your taste!

So, the birth of dance clubs may have been eons ago, but their presence is still very much alive and shakin' in 2023. They've stood the test of time and continue to be a vibrant part of our social fabric.

Blues and Its Dark Affair With the Music Industry

Hey! Let's dive into the long, dark and gross history between blues musicians and the record labels who took advantage of their talents. It's a story that's as old as time, and boy, does it have some twists and turns. You see, back in the day, blues musicians were like (and still are regarded as) the unsung heroes of the music world. They always poured their hearts and souls into their music, creating these raw, emotional tunes which resonated with people from all walks of life. But here's the kicker: record labels saw dollar signs instead of wholly appreciating the artistry of blues and its history.

These record labels quite simply saw the blues as a cash cow. They would swoop in, sign these talented musicians, and then proceed to exploit them like there was no tomorrow! Contracts were drawn up which were so one-sided, it'd made your head spin and blood boil! These poor blues artists were left with crumbs while the record labels raked in the big bucks. Sure, the exposure was fantastic and the genre itself thrived by the long overdue attention. But, at the end of the day, given many of these artists' financial situations, it is downright cruel to deny them of any revenue for their work.

But you know what? Despite all the struggles and injustices, the blues never died! It kept on thriving, thanks to the sheer determination and talent of these musicians. It fueled their stories. They may have been taken advantage of, but they never let this stop them from creating music which spoke to the very depths of the human soul.

This disturbing history between blues musicians and record labels is a cautionary tale. It's a reminder the music industry isn't always fair, but it's also a testament to the resilience and power of the blues and its legends. Let's raise a glass of whisky to those unsung heroes who paved the way for generations of musicians to come.

The Birth and Harsh Death of Ska

Ska music originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and early 1960s! In conducting research, that was something I never knew! It was a fusion of traditional Jamaican mento and calypso music. It also borrowed American R&B and jazz influences. The upbeat and energetic sound of ska was mainly characterized by its offbeat guitar and piano rhythms, prominent horn sections, and catchy melodies. Such great melodies and energetic singers! I've danced in clubs to the hot sounds of live ska!

The birth of ska can be traced back to the emergence of Jamaican record labels such as Studio One and Treasure Isle, which brought together talented musicians and producers. Artists like The Skatalites, Prince Buster, and Desmond Dekker played a crucial role in popularizing ska both in Jamaica and internationally. It really blew up!

Ska music gained popularity in the 1960s, becoming the soundtrack of Jamaica's independence from British colonial rule in 1962. It also resonated with the working-class youth who found solace and joy in its infectious rhythms. Eventually, ska's popularity spread to the United Kingdom, where it became a significant part of the British mod subculture.

However, by the late 1960s, ska music began to evolve into new subgenres such as rocksteady and reggae. Rocksteady slowed down the tempo of ska, emphasizing soulful vocals and intricate harmonies. A progressive change? Reggae, which also emerged in the late 1960s, incorporated elements of ska but added a heavier bassline and a more laid-back rhythm.

As reggae gained prominence, ska music, sadly and oddly, started to decline in popularity. The political and social climate in Jamaica also played a role in the shift away from ska. The country was experiencing tons of economic hardships and nastyvpolitical unrest, which influenced lyrical themes in reggae.

Despite its decline in popularity, ska music experienced a revival in the late 1970s and early 1980s, particularly in the United Kingdom! This revival, known as the "2 Tone" movement, combined ska with punk rock and new wave influences. Bands like The Specials, Madness, and The Selecter thankfully, brought ska back into the mainstream, introducing it to a whole new generation of fans.

Since then, ska music has continued to evolve and influence various genres, including punk, alternative rock, and pop. It has experienced periodic resurgences in popularity, with bands like No Doubt and Sublime incorporating ska elements into their music in the 1990s. These bands helped ska sounds to be exposed to younger generations.

Overall, the birth and death of ska music can be seen as a cyclical process, with periods of popularity followed by declines and subsequent revivals. However, its impact and influence on the music world remain highly significant, making ska a genre which continues to be celebrated and enjoyed by fans around the world! Long live ska!

Where Have All the Studio Musicians Gone?

The music industry has, clearly, undergone a significant transformation in recent years, with advancements in technology and home production techniques revolutionizing the way music is created and consumed!

One aspect subject to debate is the role studio musicians play in today's modern music. Traditionally, these highly skilled professionals were an integral part of the recording process, but with the rise of digital music production, some argue their role is diminishing. It's a forever changing landscape of the music industry at large.

The advent of digital music production tools, such as synthesizers, drum machines, and virtual instruments, has allowed artists and producers alike, to create entire compositions without the need for live musicians. These tools offer a vast array of sounds and effects which can be manipulated and customized to fit any musical style or genre! As a result, many artists and producers have embraced this technology, opting to create music entirely in the digital realm. We're talking large recording traditional studios closing doors. Rehearsal spots too!

Another factor contributing to the decline of studio musicians is the cost and convenience associated with digital production. Hiring a studio musician can be expensive, as it involves paying for their time, expertise, and often additional expenses such as studio rental and equipment. And of course...royalties. On the other paw, digital music software allows artists to work at their own pace, experiment with different ideas, and make changes easily without the added costs and logistical challenges of coordinating with live musicians.

Digital music production offers artists an unprecedented level of creative freedom. With access to virtual instruments and sample libraries, musicians can access a vast range of sounds and textures which would be impossible to replicate with live musicians alone. Or so they believe.

This allows artists to explore new sonic territories, experiment with unconventional arrangements, and push the boundaries of traditional music genres. The ability to manipulate and layer sounds in the digital recording world has opened up a galaxy of possibilities once previously unimaginable.

The rise of internet and social media platforms has also transformed the ways musicians collaborate and network. Artists can now connect with producers, composers, and other musicians from around the world, regardless of geographical limitations. This has led to a surge in the absence of studio musicians. But sometimes, as with AI systems, a bit of the sincerity and soul of music, goes missing too. But hey, this is after all, the 21st century...

Who Killed Disco?

Disco! Once the groove of the party, has pretty much faded into obscurity. The genre which once dominated the airwaves and dance floors in the 1970s met its demise due to a combination of factors. First and foremost, disco became overexposed and commercialized, losing its authenticity and appeal.

The saturation of disco-themed movies, TV shows, and merchandise led to a backlash from the public who grew tired of the "disco craze". Additionally, the rise of punk and new wave music provided a rebellious alternative to the polished, coke-laced and glamorous disco scene.

The anti-disco sentiment culminated in the infamous "Disco Demolition Night" at Comiskey Park in 1979, where thousands of disco records were destroyed in a symbolic act of rebellion! And boy, how the vinyl flew through the air and onto the field...a huge boom from the field as 12" record shrapnel danced under the moon. To the delight of thousands! This event really marked the beginning of the end for disco, as it was seen as a clear indication that the genre had lost its cultural relevance.

Despite its demise, disco's influence can still be felt in contemporary dance music, proving even in death, disco lives on. So, let us raise a glass of Moet to the fallen genre and reminisce about the good good good times it brought us; while also acknowledging the factors which contributed to its not so "far out" downfall. Disco may be gone, but its legacy will forever be remembered on the dance floor...and club bathroom stalls.

The Values and Power of Protest Songs

Without question, protest songs have a long and impactful history. They've been used as a powerful tool to express dissent, challenge authority, and essentially, bring about social change. From the civil rights movement to the anti-war protests of the 1960s, these songs have played a crucial role in shaping public opinion and mobilizing the masses. From U2 and Neil Young, to The Clash and John Lennon. They have the ability to capture the spirit of a generation and give voice to the marginalized. In my opinion, protest songs are not just catchy tunes, but a form of art that can inspire, educate, and unite people.

One of the earliest examples of protest songs can actually be traced way back to the labor movement of the early 20th century! Workers facing harsh working conditions and exploitation, used songs to rally support and demand better treatment. These songs, often sung on picket lines and at union meetings, not only boosted morale but spread awareness about the plight of all workers. Protest songs from this era served as a means of solidarity and resistance against oppressive labor practices. In my view? These songs were a powerful tool in the fight for workers' rights and laid the foundation for future protest songs...

The 1960s witnessed a surge in protest songs that reflected the social and political turmoil of the time! Artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Pete Seeger used their music in voicing opposition to the Vietnam War, racial inequality, and other pressing, hot-buttoned issues. Their songs became anthems for the anti-war movement and the civil rights movement, resonating with a generation seeking change. In my opinion, these protest songs not only expressed the frustrations and aspirations of the youth but also served as a catalyst for social movements as a whole. Lennon and Ono's "Give Peace a Chance", recorded during their "bed-in for peace" event in their Monteal hotel room, took protest songs to a brand new level!

In recent years, protest songs have continued to evolve and adapt to the changing times. Artists like M.I.A., Kendrick Lamar, and Childish Gambino have used their platform to address issues such as police brutality, racial injustice, and systemic inequality. Their music has sparked conversations, raised awareness, and supported while igniting movements like "Black Lives Matter". Contemporary protest songs are a testament to the enduring power of music as a form of activism! They remind us art can be a force for change and a tool for social justice. Always.

Protest songs have played a significant role in shaping society and challenging the status quo. They have the superpower to inspire, educate, and mobilize people towards a common cause! From the labor movement to the civil rights movement to the present day and all of its insanity, these songs have given a voice to the marginalized and sparked social change. Let's face it: protest songs aren't just a form of entertainment, but a vital part of our cultural and political landscape.

Wait...What Ever Happened to Breakdancing?

Breakdancing, once an extremely vibrant and popular art form, has seemingly lost its spark. What happened? Well, there are a few factors at play here. First off, we can thank the rise of new dance trends. With the advent of TikTok and social media platforms, dance challenges have taken over the internet. People are more focused on learning the latest viral moves than giving breakdancing a chance nor attention. One time, a friend tried to master "the worm" yet, he tried doing it on his back! Needless to say, we weren't surprised to see him holding his head and screaming (he was okay, just a super hard knock to his noggin)! We used to walk around the neighborhoods of NYC and just watch breakdancers do their thing. Randomly. On the streets and in the parks. Soon, crowds would gather and rightfully so!

Secondly, and frankly, perhaps the commercialization of breakdancing has played a role in its decline? Back in the day, breakdancing was all about self-expression and creativity. But now, it has become a commodity, with competitions and sponsorships dictating the direction of the art form. This has taken away some of the rawness and authenticity which once made breakdancing so captivating.

And lastly, let's not forget about the passage of time! Trends come and go, and breakdancing is no exception at the end of the day. What was once seen as cutting-edge and rebellious has now become a nostalgic reminder of our past. As new generations emerge, their interests and passions naturally evolve, leaving behind what was once popular. I reckon this is nothing new and will only continue as time keeps on slipping!

Ultimately, while breakdancing may seem like a lost art, it still has a dedicated community of die-hard enthusiasts who are keeping the spirit alive. So, even though it may not be in the spotlight like it used to be, breakdancing will always have a special place in the hearts of those who appreciate its history and artistry.
