I'm blown away by how much impact they've had on the industry...as long as one has themselves the proper hardware and software, the world is their oyster! These days, literally, anyone with a laptop and a microphone can create top-notch sounding tracks right from their home. Apartments. Garages. No need for fancy studios or big budgets anymore! Kiss the studio musician, once revered, now, no longer needed. This isn't a good thing at all. Any lover of music and instantly hear the dif between a studio musician in the groove and an artist alone in their home, synthetically and digitally, creating the music background. A variety of faux instruments at your fingertips! It sounds coo, don't get me wrong. I'm just pointing out a ton of us, can hear the battle of soul versus tech.

One major way home music studios have shaken things up is by giving artists full creative control. No more dealing with pushy producers, A&R, or record labels telling you what to do. You call the shots now, brothers and sisters! This freedom has led to a surge in unique sounds and styles, flooding the music market. You hear home produced tracks in ads, television shows and movies. Unless you're a Taylor Swift or Elton John, it's very hard for some bands and songwriters to make bank on tour. A lot comes from high priced ticket sales and merchandise. Home studios offer a way to still be talented and creative, while expanding reach. Social media platforms, major online advertising companies, streamers are all the places one can use to build an audience and get work heard!

And let's not forget about the democratization of music production! Back in the day, only the elite few could actually afford studio time. More often than not, that's where the labels and producers come in as they paid for studio time, knowing the end result would provide a financial return and profit! But now, with affordable equipment and software at our fingertips, everyone can dive into music-making. This has opened doors for so many talented folks who might have never had a chance otherwise...

Hey there, music lovers! Let's dive briefly into how technology has totally flipped the music industry on its head. From vinyl to streaming, the evolution has been wild! Back in the day, you had to hit up a record store to grab the latest tunes. Find the new hottest acts. Now? It's all about Spotify and Apple Music - convenience at its finest! Need an album to take on the go and need it now? Don't need the liner notes?

Remember the days of mixtapes and CDs? Now it's all about creating killer playlists while on the couch. Thanks to technology, we've got access to pretty much any song we want, whenever we want it. Plus, artists can now reach fans directly through social media-ain't no need for big record labels calling the shots.

But hey, it's not all rainbow flippers and butterflies. With the rise of digital downloads and streaming, some artists struggle to make a decent living. It's a tough gig out there, with so much competition. Despite the challenges, one thing's for sure-technology has revolutionized the way we discover, listen to, and share music. But will there ever be a callback to analog ways? In some ways, folks like Bob Dylan and Jack White have expressed the need for vinyl and new albums to be printed on vinyl. There's no question, the sound of a digital track or album is a very clean and fine tuned work. Vinyl and cassette tapes are more organic in their sound. Fuller. Raw. Crackles. Sounds of tape wheels whirling. Nothing can ever beat the physical value music has. No matter how quickly you need to listen to your fave band or artist, don't forget, sometimes it's cool to wait.

I can still listen to the Judgement Night album (props to Brother Jav M for the vinyl of this dope record) and be taken back to a time when Teenage Fanclub and De La Soul or Sonic Youth with Cypress Hill, just made sense and sounded fantastic!

Brand New Heavies, though not really "rock" but more groove vibes, worked with numerous mcees in creating a wonderful album. One which still stands out from that era of dope live music backing terrific rappers.

Another Musical Explosion for Your Ears and Soul

 

Hey there, Flippers! For years, my family and I have been neighbors with Joe Matt, the genius behind the comic, Peepshow. Joe was never just your average comic creator. He's a true artist who knows how to capture the raw emotions of life, particularly his own. His work was at times self-deprecating, always humorous and always very real. You read his comics and you feel as though you know him! I'd always have conversations with him about old comic book artists, music, life back east (we're in Los Angeles), old westerns...you name it. Yesterday (Sunday 9/17), my lady and I were extremely shocked to find out he passed away. His housemate, in tears, told us the upsetting news and I instantly started crying.  

 

He was just such a nice, good man. He was always creating and in fact, was working with producers to translate his comic into an animated show. He wanted me to do the voice for one of the characters. "Can you do a Philly accent?" "Pass me a hoagie, Mike Schmidt", I replied trying my best. He laughed and said, "close enough". Joe was nominated for a Will Eisner Award for Peepshow. A great accomplishment to accompany his prolific career. He will be missed and I'm still grappling with the fact he passed away at 60, while meanwhile, Henry Kissinger is alive and well at 100. Makes no sense to me. Bless Joe Matt and his kindness. 

 

When anyone's going through a tough time, usually, playing and listening to favorite tunes helps in one's healing process. And it's always cosmic when those songs perfectly encapsulate our feelings. On the new episode, I really jump across multiple genres and amazing artists. I hope you enjoy the show and remember: new shows every T&T (Tuesday and Thursday).

NEw wAve = Our Wave

The year was 1977, and a musical revolution was underway! As punk rock burst onto the scene, a new subgenre emerged which was pushing the boundaries of both music and new styles. This genre, known as "new wave", would basically change the landscape of rock forever! There's an enduring (and rightfully so) influence of new wave music on modern rock. 

New wave music is characterized by a recipe of punk energy, pop sensibility, and synthesizer-driven soundscapes. Its catchy melodies, clean guitar tones, and use of electronic instruments set it apart from its predecessors. Bands such as The Cure, Depeche Mode, and Talking Heads were at the forefront of this movement. Devo. The Pixies. They figured out the way to create fresh arrangements, innovative production techniques, and introspective lyrics. Raw. 

One of the defining features of new wave music was its emphasis on individuality and non-conformity. This is where new wave's punk influences come in to play! This attitude resonated with a new generation of listeners who sought an alternative to the mainstream. Let's face it, who wants to conform (unless it's something really fun and poppy)? New wave's embrace of the DIY ethos (lots of tape recorded demos on 4 tracks) empowered a breed of new musicians to experiment with different sounds and styles, leading to a diversification of the rock genre. 

The influence of new wave music can be seen in the evolution of rock in the decades which followed. Artists like The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, and Interpol have drawn heavily from the new wave sound, incorporating catchy hooks, synths, and danceable rhythms into their music. The infectious energy and raw emotional delivery that characterized new wave, continues to resonate in the lyrics and performances of some of today's modern rock bands. The genre's impact is undeniable.

Artists and producers, are always seemingly experimenting with new sounds and textures. This has spawned interest in the new wave aesthetic. Like, sometimes listeners (like moi) embrace nostalgia and retro influences. It's enticing, inviting and familiar.

In the ever-changing world of music, new wave remains an important part of the rich tapestry which continues to shape and define the standard rock genre! As we shuffle into the future, the timeless allure of new wave music will undoubtedly continue to inspire and influence a whole new generation of artists/bands.
